Dr Roberts grew up in Brisbane, completing his schooling and university degrees (Bachelor of Science, BSc; Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery, MBBS) locally too. Following junior doctor experience at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH), undertaking a surgically streamed rotation system, Dr Roberts undertook Urology training in Queensland in both tertiary and regional hospitals. After completion of his RACS fellowship examinations, Dr Roberts completed his training with a fellowship term at the Nepean Hospital in New South Wales, which was the first public hospital to offer Robotic Surgery and remains the busiest public robotics program in NSW. He gained considerable experience in robotic oncology for prostate, bladder and kidney cancer, as well as innovative endourological techniques, including Holmium Enucleation Prostatectomy (HoLEP), En-Bloc removal of Bladder tumours and Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) with laser surgery for large kidney stones. In recognition of his training and technical skill, Dr Roberts received certification from the EAU Robotic Urology Section (ERUS). Dr Roberts returned to Brisbane to commence consultant practice at the RBWH and Redcliffe Hospitals in general urology, as well as robotic surgery. He served as the Acting Director of Urology at the RBWH in 2021-2022. Since 2021, he has worked at the Surgical Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS) facility and was appointed as Deputy Clinical Director of Surgery. He has led the implementation of robotic surgery at STARS, enabling greater access to robotic surgery for Queensland patients. | His clinical and research interests include urologic oncology (surgery and other treatments, imaging and biomarkers), endourology and urological infections. He established the RBWH Urology-Infectious Diseases Multidisciplinary team in 2021 and works with urologists, infectious diseases physicians, microbiologists and nursing staff to improve care for people suffering from complex infections. Matthew also serves as a state committee member for the Prostate Cancer Outcomes Registry of Australia and New Zealand (PCOR-ANZ) and USANZ Research and Education Sub-Committees. Matthew was awarded a highly competitive Metro North Clinician Research Fellowship and works as a surgeon-scientist as Associate Professor and Group Leader of the Prostate Theranostics and Urological Diseases Research Group at The University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research (UQCCR). He completed his PhD investigating new biomarkers for the early detection and characterization of prostate cancer and now leads and contributes to local and national clinical trials. Matthew has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed manuscripts in international journals, as well as presented his research at more than 20 international urology and clinical cancer meetings. Matthew maintains an interest in medical education as with the UQ Faculty of Medicine, being an invited lecturer for medical student education and invited member of the Medical Student Research Committee. Outside of work Matthew enjoys spending time with his growing family, playing competitive basketball and keeping fit. |
